Talk

Thursday, March 30, 2023
6:30 – 8 pm EDT
Scheuer Auditorium

Join us for a conversation with Christopher Rothko and Kate Rothko Prizel, moderated by Jewish Museum Curator Stephen Brown on the occasion of the publication of a landmark monograph on an unprecedented scale that allows all aspects of Mark Rothko’s career to be heard in full voice, published in close collaboration with the artist’s family and featuring beloved works from major collections as well as never-before-seen canvases and paintings on paper. Kate Rothko Prizel and Christopher Rothko draw on intimate knowledge of the artworks and the artist’s life to give a fuller picture of their father and place him within the context of art history; they endeavor to give an impartial portrait—the man and his work—while introducing personal details where they can enlighten.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing after the event. Program attendees save 10% on the book; Jewish Museum members save 20%.

About the Authors:

Christopher Rothko is a psychologist, writer and a custodian of the Rothko legacy in partnership with his sister, Kate. He is editor of his father's book of philosophical writings, The Artist's Reality. His book of essays, Mark Rothko from the Inside Out, was published in 2015 by Yale University Press. Dr. Rothko has helped prepare more than two dozen Rothko exhibitions at museums and galleries around the globe and is co-curator of the upcoming Rothko exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. He is Past Chair of the Rothko Chapel Board and is currently head of the Opening Spaces Campaign, guiding the restoration of the Chapel and enhancement of its campus.

Kate Rothko Prizel is a retired physician and the daughter of Mark Rothko. She attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and went on to practice Clinical Pathology and Transfusion Medicine and teach Pathology in the Baltimore-Washington area. She fought and won a prolonged legal battle that resulted in the return of almost 700 of her father’s works to his estate. She was involved in reconstituting the Mark Rothko Foundation which donated the bulk of the art works to 19 museums, allowing public access to some of the most important paintings of the 20th Century. Since that time Kate has been actively involved with maintaining her father’s legacy through planning exhibitions, overseeing the creation of the Mark Rothko catalogue raisonné and writing about her father.
