About the performers:

Oran Etkin has been described as "Ebullient" by The New York Times and voted #1 Rising Star Clarinetist by DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll. His music can be heard regularly on major concert stages around the world and on several albums including a Grammy Award-winning compilation. His 2019 family album, Finding Friends Far From Home, was recorded and filmed on location in Zimbabwe, China, Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia and Japan in collaboration with traditional musicians in each country. Etkin's work is grounded in the belief that the true power of music lies not just in the individual's pursuit of technical mastery but in the joyful and soulful creation of community.

For nearly a decade, Etkin’s Timbalooloo program has created a paradigm shift in music education, instilling the idea of music as communication and dialogue by making instruments come alive and talk with each other. This innovative approach has attracted the attention of thousands of parents, including Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Harvey Keitel, Martha Stewart, Ken Burns and Edie Falco, all of whom enrolled their children or grand-children in Etkin’s Timbalooloo program.

Yacouba Sissoko was born in Mali and carries forward a centuries old tradition of Djeli (or Griot) music, storytelling and peacekeeping. Sissoko has performed, toured and recorded with well known African musicians such as Baaba Maal, Sekou (Bambino) Diabate and Kerfala Kante. Sissoko has also recorded and performed with a variety of artists including Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Lauren Hill, and Regina Carter.
